On September 1 2004, Law n. 226 of August 23 2004 (published on the Gazzetta Ufficiale (Serie Generale) n. 204 of August 31 2004, enterd into force. The Law anticipated the suspension of Mlitary draft to January 1, 2005 .

The last young men called to the draft were those born before December 31, 1985.

By the year 2007, an army only composed of volunteers, open to women, will be formed.

The Military Districts and the Italian Comuni of residency will send to the young men who abided to the military regulation on conscription the "Fogli di Congedo Illimitato". The Consulate General of New York will distribute them to the addresses.

Those who are prosecuted for the crime of renitenza or because they did not respond to the call to the army will receive information and support from the Consulate General to regularize their position.
